Extracurriculars
Extracurriculars are one of the most important parts of your application so you should give them some time and thought.
Join a sports team!
One easy and fun way to start building your profile for college is joining one of your schools offered sports team.
Colleges and universities really value leadership, teamwork, and passion in the students they accept and being able to show that you have some of those qualities will make you a stronger candidate. Joining a team early into your high school career and putting a lot of time and effort into it shows dedication. This can be a strong tool for your application if you use it correctly.
This is also a great way for you to achieve a scholarship if you are especially passionate and skilled at the sport you choose. This means you can continue to play your sport well into college. At University Louisiana Lafayette, a sports scholarship helps you pay for your tuition and all you need to do is hold a minimum gpa and participate on the NCAA team. Many other institutions and universities follow a similar system.
Join a Club!
Another great way to show leadership, teamwork, and passion but through more academic means is joining a club.
Clubs serve as a way for you to show your interest in different topics and it can be a topic about academics or your hobbies! Starting a club at your school is very special and creating a community is a great thing to put on an application.
For Louisiana colleges, joining Louisiana organizations or clubs is a great way to give back to your community and show that you are dedicated to Louisiana. An example of a club where you can represent Louisiana is FBLA(Future Business Leaders of America). These types of clubs are a great way for students to learn, while showing their passion for Louisiana centered activities and organizations.
Do some community service!
Doing service shows colleges that you have initiative and compassion and are willing to give up your time for those not as well off.
Colleges really value students giving back to their communities. For this reason we strongly recommend that you consider doing some service. This could be helping at a food drive, collecting clothes for children, doing a bake sale for charity, and so much more. Getting creative also adds a bit of flair to your application and will make you stand out even more.
Any other hobbies!
If you have a hobby that you are passionate about, it is always a good idea to use it on your application.
When colleges are looking at students applications, seeing passion in any sector of a students free time is important. Being highly interested in anything shows commitment and depending on your hobby it can show interest in different academic/(college)extracurricular realms. It is never wrong of you to show that interest and gives colleges/universities a little insight on who you are and what you will bring to their school.
