fREQUENTLY ASKED ADMISSIONS QUESTIONS:

My GPA is low. Should I go to community college or a 4-year university?

Admissions agents recommend that students with a GPA at or below a 3.0 should consider community college, however there are pros and cons financially, and with opportunities offered. It may be cheaper for students to attend community college, as they will likely not achieve merit-based scholarships at a 4 -ear university. However, it is important to note that transfer students do not often receive substantial scholarships, so their financial situation would likely worsen when they transfer to a 4-year institution. This is not to deter anyone from this path, as many successful individuals have attended community college or both community college and a 4-year university. Everything depends on your individual goals.

I identify as a minority (student of color, gender minority, LGBTQ+, rural student..), how should this identity play out in my admissions essays?

The ultimate answer to this question is up to personal preference, however admissions agents have advised that before depending too heavily on that identity in your essays, that you consider the college you are applying to. If the university you are applying to does not value diversity or does not have a high population of students with your identity, it is likely that the characteristic displayed is not valued by that university’s admissions. This is important for not only how you talk about your identity, but also, how comfortable you would feel attending that school. Schools like LSU have made clear that they value diversity, so bringing up struggles that you have experienced in relation to your minority status could be beneficial in your essays, however, there are many aspects to identity.
